Warring States Period decoration on a hickory jian.
Photographs by Peter Dekker of Mandarin Mansion |

|
This style of high-class decoration dates to the Warring States period of 476 - 221 BC. This particular design was not used as a sword decoration in the Qing Dynasty, but never the less, it fits well within the formal shapes of these sword fittings. The asymmetric and organic nature of the decoration adds a dynamic feeling to the sword and is quite in tune with the tastes of the Qing scholars and literati. The grip wrap on this jian was done by Peter Dekker . The inscription is in Manchu: Fe doro Meaning ‘The old way’ - reminding the Manchu people to hold on to their traditional values. |
