These grip wraps are designed to stand up to the rigours of practical use.
They are made in 3 stages: Firstly, the grip is reduced by the thickness of the cord leaving the ends of the grip raised up like ferrules.

Sparring quality wraps |

Secondly, the grip is treated with lacquer. This helps to reduce expansion of the wood due to moisture changes and so creates a more stable base for the wrap.
Thirdly, the cotton wrap cord is glued onto the wood during the wrapping process. This helps to make the wrap even more secure.
When the grip is wrapped, the cord finishes flush with the ‘ferrules’ and this recess prevents the wrap from sliding forwards or backwards along the grip. Just like the metal fittings of a real sword. |
There are surviving examples of antique Chinese swords where the grip wraps have been glued or lacquered to prevent slipping. There are also some antique examples of untreated wraps which have come loose and slipped around the grip. |
